Disclaimer: This is a recap, but mostly a rant. Enjoy.

Alright, so it’s the season finale of Insecure and I think it’s safe to say that this was the perfect ending to the madness.

The genius behind this episode was in the writers’ ability to tell the story through a sort of parallel narrative, using flashbacks and a triple journey sequence to bring the storylines of our leading characters together.

So boom, we start things off at a local marathon that Lawrence and his co-workers are participating in. I guess this solidifies that him and Aparna, are in fact “a thing;” which is confirmed through the running, cooking, and kitchen-top loving the two were partaking in early on in the episode. lead_960We shift scenes to find Lawrence and Aparna at a restaurant and somehow the two get to talking about a co-worker that Aparna had “brief” relations with. Now, I’ve always been taught to not ask questions you don’t want to answers to and I’m guessing Lawrence never got this memo because he just keeps digging and prying Aparna for details of her relations, I was guessing he was going to ask for the size of his manly goods next. At this point, Lawrence is just a glutton for pain, because through his line of questioning, his insecurities are just bleeding out everywhere; all over the car, on Aparna’s phone, the streets… figuratively, of course.

Next, we catch up with Molly who at first glance seems to be living her best, renewed version of life. She’s making moves at her job, crushing interviews, and impressing potential partners. Her plan is to continue to go to these interviews, get her offers stacked up, and go back to the partners at her current job to somehow “show them her worth.”

Molly, sis… they already know your worth, but they’ll never tell you this, of course. But you see, the only person in this equation that’s not seeing the value in you and what you bring to the table… is you. giphy (30)Quentin and Molly are on a date, and you can see just how enamored he is with her. He’s throwing her compliments, hinting to future plans with her, trying to respectfully shoot his shot, but Molly is blocking them from the backboard like she’s Dikembe Mutombo in his prime.

Then, when he motions at them going out for dinner the next time she’s in town, homegirl is so quick with the defensive moves that Quentin ends up in the Friend Zone quicker than she can finish saying, “thanks, homie.” Oh, Quentin, you seem like a great, smart, *wealthy* guy with good intentions, but Molly isn’t looking for a good guy right now, she wants dysfunction. And if I were you, playa, I would run. Like, now.

In the next scene, I almost spit out my water when I saw Molly was back with her therapist. I’ve been questioning her judgment ever since she let her go, so in my eyes, there was no way she would finally make a good, positive decision, but she proved me wrong… sorta… The two were discussing Molly’s outings with Quentin and why she feels like he’s just not who she “should be with” and her therapist hits her with straight facts like, “Stop focusing on what you should have and start focusing on what you could have.” I don’t know about y’all, but I be getting my little 4-minute therapy session in whenever Molly does, because her doctor he dropping all the gems.

But at the end of the session, our light-skin friend, Dro, hits Molly with the, “I miss you” text and oh, how she so conveniently forgets to bring up him, his wife, and their whole affair disguised as an “open relationship” during the session. See, y’all know how I feel about Molly. She irks the heck out of me because she wants to have control over every part of her life expect for the things that are actually to her detriment. This is not how therapy works, this is not how life works, Molly. She chooses to disclose the parts of her life she feels needs to most work all while concealing the real dysfunction that actually needs the most light. Maybe it’s her fear of judgement or her just not wanting to let go of this one thing. She likes her affair with Dro, she likes the secrecy and familiarity, and I don’t see her letting go of him or what they have going on, anytime soon.

Issa, Issa, Issa.

So back at the marathon, Kelly texts all of the friends to meet her at the finished line, where they find out she had to stop short of completing the race because she got her period. *rolls eyes* Anyway, we find out Tiffany is pregnant and how everyone in their group of friends has something noteworthy going on in their life… expect for Issa. But we all know Issa couldn’t leave herself out, so she ends up sharing that she’s moving. And to that we all gave a collective “arfff??” because in case you forget Issa, you’re too broke to move! Matter of fact, you were too broke to throw that little temper tantrum from last episode. Broke people can’t go around breaking their own stuff, that like, defies all laws of sensibility and broke-ology.

So, we find that she’s not lying about moving, her rent is being raised due to the effects of gentrification, so she’s technically being forced out and planning to move in with her brother, or so we think…

Issa completed her packing, but has to do one final walk through of the apartment, and among the boxes and cleaning supplies is Lawrence, waiting for her.

Now, this scene was for all the people out there who have never received closure from their past relationships. To all the people who have never gotten a proper, “I’m sorry for being a f***boi…,” from their sorry ex-boyfriend or a “I apologize for being emotional abusive and manipulating…,” from their trash ex-girlfriend. A lot of us are out here having to piece ourselves back together with the knockoff Elmer’s glue we hand-crafted ourselves.

Now, the two of them are face to face, and have the opportunity to say their piece with maturity and developed thoughts, not those heated, gut shots they took at one another last episode (that was so hard to watch).

Things got emotional, and I may or may not have had a tear well up in my eye. They shared their condolences and surprisingly, expressed the love that they still have for one another (which we all knew, by the way!). As Lawrence is heading out the door, he turns back, gets on one knee and proposed to Issa!!

Bruh, when I was watching that montage of how their life could have been, I was shook! But in actuality, it was more like that moment before you die, when your life flashes before your eyes, thus marking this as the end of Lawrence and Issa.

But the beginning to something else???

Issa, takes an Lyfe to her new place which I though would be her brother’s crib and that be the end of the story, but it wouldn’t be Insecure if they didn’t leave us on a cliffhanger of crazy

Issa walks up to the door, the door opens, and guess who’s beautiful, dark chocolate face meets us all with that Kool-Aid smile from heaven: Daniel.

And on the other side of town, Molly’s getting all sexy-like for another head full of teeth: Dro.

Before you leave: I just want to say, thank you to Issa Rae, Larry Willmore, Prentice Penny, Melina Matsoukas and all the actors who are apart of creating and producing this amazing work of Black art. I’m going to miss this show and all of it’s relateable messiness. Until next season, weigh in on this week’s episode of Insecure in the comments below and let me hear your thoughts!

  1. I am so sad we have to wait another year! I want more Insecure & I want it now LOL but on a serious note I loved your recap. I am so over Molly. Like you mentioned her job sees her worth they just don’t care to show her cause she doesn’t see it. This is one of those cases where if you don’t know your worth no one else will. I think that insecurity also spills into her relationship life as well.

    1. wow, girl this is a word! Molly not seeing her worth def slips unto her relationships cause if she knew her worth, she would understand that there are plenty of *unmarried* men in this world who would see all she has to offer & WIFE HER. sigh… I just want to talk to her teenage self, give her a hug & see what went wrong lmbo but yeah, I’m def feeling some type of way knowing that we wont be seeing their crazy behinds for a WHOLE year, what we gone do now hahaha

thanks for checking it out! ❤
